Preserves, jams, and marmalades have always been a big part of South African culture, which is why we fell in love with the incredible human behind the Brenda’s Preserves brand. Like most South African businesses, Brenda’s story started out as a labor of love, a culinary experiment created in her very own kitchen. Her quest for producing additive-free preserves from the freshest products quickly turned from a small garage storage facility to a fully-fledged business.
“I was fortunate enough to establish my business before my daughter was born. Having a business and a family, definitely comes with its challenges. Although we try to be perfect in all dimensions of life, we cannot be perfect, but try our best to be the best we can!” says Brenda
While balancing personal and work life may not always be picture perfect, Brenda has certainly mastered the art of making delicious homemade treats, ideal for our unique corporate gifting catalogue. Brenda started producing traditional fig and apricot jams back in 2007, meeting some incredible humans along the way, some of whom have been pivotal to her success story. As the years went by, Brenda’s product line quickly expanded to marmalades, glazes, condiments, preserves and chutneys – an inspiration that she concocted from her passion for spices. One wonders, how does she do it all?
“I have an incredibly reliable team behind me, assisting me at work and home, enabling me to still spend quality time with my daughter.”
As an entrepreneur, Brenda is a firm believer in teaching our youth about the importance of hard work and being self-sufficient. Entrepreneurship is something she deeply values, a fulfilling experience that she happily passes down to her staff members and her own family.
“It is of utmost importance to teach our children to be Entrepreneurs and to know what hard work is, and where privileges come from. During weekend and holiday times I try and include my daughter in the business, to teach her about business operations and to create a passion for the work we do.”
When Brenda is not foraging organic fields for new flavours and produce, she is spending quality time with her husband, daughter and friends. It is, after all, the reason “why we do what we do.”
